The Korea Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry Association (Chairman Kang Sung-hee) announced on Nov. 19 that it will honor 14 industry contributors for their contributions to the development of the domestic refrigeration and air conditioning industry, technology development, and new market development.

A total of 14 people will receive the government awards, including one from the President, one from the Prime Minister, seven from the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, and five from the Minister of SMEs and Startups. The awards ceremony will be held at the opening ceremony of the Korea Industrial Show on the 19th, with only a few winners in attendance due to COVID-19.

This year, the President's Citation was awarded to Kim Tae-soo, CEO of Century, and the Prime Minister's Citation was awarded to Hong Chang-woo, Executive Director of Samcheon Riis.

CEO Kim Tae-soo of Century, who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Honor, was recognized for his contribution to military modernization by localizing air conditioners for the military, which had been dependent on imports since 1994, replacing imports (90 billion won) and stably supplying high-tech air conditioners for the Cheonma project, the Cheongung project, the next generation of combat armored vehicles, and mid-altitude unmanned aerial vehicles. In addition, in the civilian sector, the company has developed air conditioners for communication equipment, including the Variable Capacity Control - Air Conditioner for 4G (Patent 10-1685580), contributing to energy savings and environmental protection.

Mr. Hong Chang-woo, Executive Vice President of Samcheon Liess, was recognized for his contributions to reducing electricity peaks and promoting domestic technology development by expanding the distribution of eco-friendly and highly efficient gas heat pumps (GHPs) that do not use electricity and are powered by gas engines, and applying applied air conditioning (industrial, clean room, and complex) systems. It has also contributed to balancing the country's energy demand by expanding the distribution of decentralized power and renewable energy.

The Minister of Trade, Industry, and Energy Award was presented to Carrier Refrigeration CEO Ko Jong-won, Cricket Bumyang Refrigeration CEO Na Jun-yong, LG Electronics CEO Nam Sang-cheol, ESCA CEO Kim Ki-hong, Kyung-An Thermotech CEO Eom Sang-soo, Century CEO Ok Jin-gu, and Kookmin University Professor Jang Young-soo.

Carrier Refrigeration CEO Ko Jong-won has contributed to the development of the bio cold chain industry by launching a refrigerated and frozen tower car for safe transportation of COVID-19 vaccines in Korea and developing an ultra-low temperature freezer that can be stored at a stable temperature of minus 90℃.

Mr. Na has contributed to the development of the domestic refrigeration and air-conditioning industry through the development of high-efficiency, renewable, and exportable heating and cooling products and the implementation of national projects, and to the increase of exports through overseas expansion.

Nam Sang-cheol of LG Electronics was recognized for his contributions to the development of the national industry, diversification of cooling and heating energy sources, and revitalization of gas cooling and heating equipment exports through the development and expansion of localization of high-efficiency gas cooling and heating equipment (absorption water heaters, gas heat pumps).

Mr. Kim Ki-hong, CEO of ESKAY, has been engaged in heat exchanger parts manufacturing for 35 years and has exported all of its production to the North American market, averaging $7,410,000 per year for the past three years, contributing to strengthening national competitiveness and developing the capital goods industry.

Mr. Eom Sang-soo, CEO of Kyung-An Thermotech, was recognized for contributing to the enhancement of national competitiveness by protecting the domestic market (60%) with technology and quality competition on par with global imports through the localization of capital goods for heating, ventilation and air conditioning pressure vessels, and laying the foundation for exports.

He has created technology-leading products in the field of refrigeration and air conditioning through the development of turbocoolers for eco-friendly refrigerants and ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle), and contributed to public health through the development of various indoor air quality improvement products such as the sealed Smart Clean Air Shelter, which uses a combined air conditioner with dust collection and cooling and heating functions, and the PM 1.0 air purifier with HEPA filter.

Professor Jang Young-soo of Kookmin University was recognized for his contributions to the development of the domestic refrigeration and air-conditioning industry through various national and policy tasks for the development of eco-friendly refrigeration systems, domestic and international academic activities, technology standardization, and human resource training.

Five recipients of the Minister of SMEs and Startups Award were Bang Won-jung, CEO of Bugwang Metals, Park Jung-won, Deputy Director of the Korea Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Safety Management Institute, Kim Cheol-soo, CEO of Sekwang Tech, Lee Jae-joon, Deputy Director of NSV, and Heo Kyung-soon, Director of AP.

He is responsible for planning and managing the production system process, basic technology, and operation process, and has contributed to improving the export competitiveness of Dongguan products by reducing costs and improving management through obtaining domestic and foreign quality certifications and developing production technology with high labor and yield productivity.

Park Jung-won, deputy director of the Korea Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Safety Management Institute, contributed to industrial development and international competitiveness by promoting technology development and quality improvement in high-pressure gas-related industries to prevent harm to consumers and secure public safety through safety management of products and manufacturing facilities used in refrigeration and air conditioning.

Since its founding in 1999, CEO Kim has been recognized for his contributions to the development of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning industry, including the development of small refrigerators and patent applications for constant temperature and humidity devices and humidifier units, and the expansion of the distribution of constant temperature and humidity devices and air conditioners with patented technologies to improve air quality in multiple facilities and prevent the spread of corona.

Lee Jae-joon has been working to replace imports and improve quality by expanding the supply of domestic dustproof and soundproof products to large construction sites in Korea, which are monopolized by products made in the U.S. and Japan, and has contributed to the expansion of exports of domestic products by developing localized products for overseas markets.

On the one hand, she has secured management innovation and competitiveness by stabilizing quality and establishing a mass production system by promoting molds for product casing and materials, and on the other hand, she has helped expand the market by introducing new products such as ERP and producing fan coil units that combine RF wireless communication.
